Stranded Deep 2 Cartographer 2.0
The original island editor is coming back bigger, built for a river world you can share.
Cartographer was the quiet reason a lot of people never uninstalled the first Stranded Deep. After the sharks got old, you sculpted an island, dropped a wreck, and dared a friend to last the night. North Beach Games knows that. The Steam page and the official FAQ both say the editor is back as a revamp — Cartographer 2.0 in press language — with more ways to create locations, add them to your world, and share with friends on any platform.
This guide is for the players who will launch Early Access, survive two rivers, then open the editor. It is also for people who should not skip survival just because a custom map exists. The sandbox still has to feed you.
What is actually confirmed
Confirmed: a revamped Cartographer, custom locations and experiences, sharing with friends, and cross-platform sharing as a goal. Confirmed: Early Access will add map-editor content over time, not only biomes and animals. Confirmed: the live world is still a generated endless river with hand-crafted sites mixed in. Cartographer is how the community adds more of those sites, not how you delete the desert.
Not confirmed: the exact toolset on day one, whether sharing is a workshop, a file drop, or a first-party browser, and whether console players receive the editor in the same season as PC. The studio has said other platforms including consoles are planned. It has not dated them. Do not promise a PlayStation island stamp in 2027 in your Discord.
Design for a river, not an atoll
The original editor thought in islands because the game thought in islands. The sequel thinks in a channel. A good custom location should read from the water: a wreck silhouette, a ruin on a palm bend, a canyon pinch that makes paddlers slow down. If your map only works after a loading screen teleport, you are fighting the fantasy described in river exploration.
Place threats with the wildlife tier list in mind. A hippo spawn on the tutorial bank is a joke once. A crocodile commute through the only drinking spot is a design. Use the living food chain as lighting, not as a jump-scare pile.
Give players a reason to leave the kayak and a reason to return. Salvage that matches floating-home building — beams, tyres, salvage that looks like it could lash to a raft — will feel native. Giant monuments that ignore thirst will feel like a different genre parked on the sand.
Share without wrecking someone else’s run
“Share with friends on any platform” is a support headache and a gift. Label your locations. State whether they are peaceful galleries or death gauntlets. Remember co-op may drop two people into your canyon with no warning. Build a spawn that is not a mouth.
Mods are a separate promise. The FAQ says the studio is excited about the original’s mod scene and will talk more later. Cartographer is the official authoring layer. Mods may go deeper. Do not install random executables because a thumbnail says SD2. Keep official links as the source for whatever distribution they eventually bless.
How Cartographer fits Early Access
The two-to-three-year Early Access window is partly an editor pipeline. Steam says the full 1.0 will bring locations, biomes, wildlife, crafting, and Cartographer content together. If you loved making maps more than surviving, you are still in the audience — but the first slice is a playable survival river, not an empty sculpting sandbox. Read Early Access so you do not refund on day one because the node graph is thin.
A sane personal plan: beat a generated stretch, learn how to survive, then open Cartographer to rebuild the one bank you actually liked. Publish when sharing exists. Watch the roadmap for editor-shaped blogs. The Czech Mates era already showed a studio that talks about structure; the desert reveal just changed the terrain under those tools.
Cartographer 2.0 is how the sequel stays yours after the official biomes stop surprising you. Use it to extend the river, not to hide from it.
