Stranded Deep 2 Early Access Explained
A work-in-progress river, a longer wait than a trailer, and a higher price after 1.0.
Stranded Deep 1 lived in Early Access from 2015 to 2022. The sequel is walking back into that fire on purpose. North Beach Games’ Steam FAQ is unusually plain: they have a game, you have ideas, Early Access is how those meet. The community shaped the first title. They want that loop again, with a larger Prague team and a modular world that can accept new biomes without a full reboot.
If you hated seven years of raft bugs, this page is the warning label. If you loved watching an ocean grow, this page is the shopping list.
Dates that exist, and dates that do not
Target: Steam Early Access in early 2027. Not a month. Not a day. “To be announced” is still the store’s release field. Estimated Early Access length: two to three years. Full 1.0 is therefore a late-decade event if the estimate holds. The studio has not named a 1.0 year, and outlets that print 2029–2030 are doing arithmetic, not quoting a promise.
Platforms: PC Steam first. Other services and consoles planned, undated. Controller support during Early Access. Steam Deck Verified as a goal during Early Access, not a sticker at the wishlist stage.
Price: it will be cheaper in Early Access than after. Steam’s own question “Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?” is answered yes, to reflect added content. There is no public dollar amount yet. Do not paste a fake $29.99 on social because it feels right.
What “playable on day one” means
The current-state paragraph is the most useful thing on the store. You can explore the river by kayak or raft. You manage health, hunger, thirst, and exposure. You find hand-crafted locations across several biomes. Core systems are in. Expect rough edges and features still being tuned.
Translate that. There will be a survival loop you can finish a night in. There will not be the entire animal table, the entire editor, or a polished co-op handbook. Co-op is first-class and still light on specifics. Cartographer 2.0 is confirmed as a pillar of the growth plan, not as a dated checkbox. Floating homes are in the marketing as a core fantasy; snapping polish is exactly the kind of thing Early Access exists to hurt.
If you need a finished product, wait. If you want to break the river and file tickets, you are the audience they asked for.
How they say they will listen
Regular dev blogs, updates, and a living public roadmap. Community spaces on “all the major platforms,” with Discord as the primary room. A dedicated community team. That is the process paragraph. Use official links instead of random Trello clones. When the roadmap exists, it will be mirrored on this wiki’s roadmap page, not replaced by a fan spreadsheet.
Content they already promised to add during Early Access: new locations, biomes, wildlife, map-editor content, deeper crafting, progression, and co-op. That list is also a confession. Those systems are not finished. Buying day one is buying the list as a trajectory.
Who should wait
Anyone whose PC misses system requirements. Anyone who only wanted another Pacific. Anyone who refunds the minute a hippo clips a kayak. Anyone who needs split-screen confirmed in writing. Anyone who thinks “early 2027” means tonight.
Who might buy: veterans who missed the original’s Early Access and want a seat this time; sandbox players who like modular maps; co-op pairs willing to be patient; Cartographer authors who can live with a thin toolset at first. Read getting started and the reveal recap before you spend.
Early Access is not a demo and not 1.0. It is a two-to-three-year river with a price that climbs when the desert is full. Go in with that sentence or do not go in.
