Stranded Deep 2 Stranded Deep 1 vs 2

Same survival DNA, a different wilderness, and a much heavier PC.

Stranded Deep 1 vs 2

If you bounced off the first Stranded Deep because the islands got small, the sequel is the argument that the studio heard you. If you loved the first game because it was a cheap, weird Pacific toy, the sequel is a different purchase. This page is the side-by-side without a fake score.

Use it next to getting started and system requirements. The original is out. The sequel is a wishlist for Early Access in early 2027.

Setting and fantasy

Stranded Deep 1: plane crash, Pacific atolls, ocean as the map, islands as the rooms, sharks as the mascot threat, a yellow life raft as the joke that becomes a vehicle.

Stranded Deep 2: you are still an ordinary person with no rescue. The map is an endless generated river through desert wilderness. Canyons, dunes, prairies, lakes. Hand-crafted locations instead of a finite island list. The yellow raft is reborn as a yellow kayak. Apex attention moves to crocodiles and hippos. Edwards’ own line: a croc steamroll is worse than his old shark hits.

It is not a story sequel. Official FAQ: new adventure, maybe nods, no continuation of the first plot. If you wanted a cinematic recap of the plane, this is the wrong product. If you wanted “stranded” as a verb you can take to a new climate, this is the pitch. Details live in river exploration and wildlife.

Studio and platform

SD1: Beam Team Games, a long Early Access, 1.0 in 2022, consoles after PC, a reputation for running on humble hardware.

SD2: North Beach Games as developer and publisher, Prague studio, Edwards as creative director. Steam PC first, consoles planned later. Hardware floor is a generation jump: Windows 11, 16 GB, DX12, SSD, 2060 SUPER / 6600. The toaster era is over. That alone will split the original’s audience.

Systems that return in a new shape

The watch returns. Survival still means health, hunger, thirst, plus exposure. Building still exists, but Steam wants the home to float and travel. Cartographer returns as 2.0 with cross-platform sharing as a goal — see Cartographer. Co-op is not a late add-on in the FAQ; it is first-class, even though co-op still lacks a player count. Mods are promised again.

New: living food chain that does not revolve around you, terrain digging and river redirects, material-per-part crafting, a modular world built to take years of biomes. Those are sequel columns, not patches for the Pacific.

Early Access posture

SD1’s Early Access was a small-team marathon that defined the game’s reputation, for better and worse. SD2’s FAQ estimates two to three years with a larger team, a price that rises after, and a public roadmap still to come. Read Early Access explained before you assume “they shipped 1.0 once, so this one is finished.” It is not finished. They said so.

Day-one SD2 is a playable survival river with rough edges. Day-one SD1, in 2015, was a different kind of rough. Do not expect the 2022 console build’s comfort on a 2027 wishlist.

Who should buy which

Stay on SD1 if you want a complete, cheap Pacific sandbox that already has split-screen, a known island editor, and hardware that forgives you. Move to SD2 if the desert-river trailer looks like the game you secretly wanted in 2018, if you can meet the spec, and if you accept two to three years of modular growth. Many people will keep both. That is allowed. The floating home will not install inside your old raft save.

When North Beach Games publishes more columns — player cap, Deck rating, extra biomes — this comparison gets new rows. Until then, the difference is climate, current, and a PC that has to keep up.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is Stranded Deep 2 a direct story sequel?

No. Official FAQ: new survival adventure, not a continuation of the first game’s events.

Does the yellow raft return?

As a yellow kayak. Raft travel is still listed. The island-hopper fantasy does not.

Which game is harder on PCs?

The sequel. See system requirements. The original’s low bar is gone.

Will Cartographer and co-op return?

Yes in spirit. Cartographer 2.0 and first-class co-op are confirmed, with details still thin.

Should I wait to finish the first game first?

Only if you want the Pacific loop. The sequel does not require a completed SD1 save. See getting started.
