Stranded Deep 2 New Depths Recap
The first 2025 Sam Edwards blog, before the desert had a name.
On 20 June 2025 Edwards restarted the old 2013 habit: a public developer blog. New Depths is the first of that series. It does not mention a desert. It does mention a larger Prague team, a food-chain prototype, dynamic crafting, and an internal Building 2.0 drop. The recap video in the middle of this page is a community read-through of that post, not a studio trailer.
Use it as prequel context for Stranded in Style, Czech Mates on the building page, 2025 Wrapped, and the August 2026 reveal.
Scaling up, staying true
Edwards wrote that the team had grown quickly over nine months. Creative calls had more voices than the original two-person myth. His job, as he framed it, was injecting the soul of Stranded Deep 1 so the sequel stayed a faithful successor while going bigger. A player feedback form from that period is cited as a guide. That is why later posts keep saying sandbox over story.
If you only arrived in 2026, this paragraph is why the sequel is not a cinematic reboot. Getting started and Stranded Deep 1 vs 2 inherit that decision.
Animal AI and the food chain
New Depths is the first public use of “food chain” in the SD2 blogs. Edwards said a prototype already showed emergent behaviours that would change hunting, combat, and travel. That sentence is the ancestor of Steam’s “you are not at the top.” Crocodiles and hippos were not named yet. The system was. Wildlife and the threat tiers are the 2026 names on that 2025 skeleton.
Open water was still the metaphor. He wrote that ocean atmosphere isolated you and could be life or danger, and that they were exploring how that natural force would challenge you in the sequel. A year later the force was a river. The isolation thesis survived. River exploration is the map of that swap.
Dynamic crafting and Building 2.0
He said they knew what they wanted from a new dynamic crafting system and were testing how to make it fun. An early prototype already earned an “OK, that’s cool.” The first internal Building 2.0 landed the week of the post, after many versions. He felt it was the one. Crafting and floating homes are the player-facing translations. Recipes still do not exist. The ambition does.
Art was already mocking styles, textures, shape language, color grading, and post effects. That work became Stranded in Style two months later. Read both in order if you care how a greybox becomes a hippo.
What this post does not say
No Early Access date. No desert. No kayak. No Cartographer 2.0 name. No co-op player cap. Those arrive in later documents. Do not quote New Depths as a 2027 calendar. Quote it as the moment the sequel started talking in public again.
Edwards promised to introduce more of the team. Czech Mates delivered faces. New Ground delivered the setting. The roadmap is the index of that sequence. After the 2026 reveal he told Gamereactor he planned monthly blogs now that the setting was out. This wiki will add a row when those land. Until then, New Depths is the origin post for systems people still search: food chain, Building 2.0, dynamic crafting.
Stay alive was already the sign-off. The desert only made the joke less funny.
